Special Message for All-Inclusive Resort Guests

H10 Punta Turquesa, H10 Punta Coral, Excellence Riviera Cancun, NOW Saphire, Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita, Azul Hotel & Beach Resort, Ceiba del Mar, El Dorado Royale, Marina El Cid, NOW Jade, Azul Sensatori, Secrets Silversands & Mayan Palace

Congratulations on your purchase of a Riviera Maya resort vacation! You will have a great time, but please be aware of a few things.

Your resort will be lovely and comfortable, but it's not Mexico.
Your food & drinks will be delicious, but they are not Mexican.

Yes, you will be staying in a resort, not in Mexico. The good news is that Mexico is close by...it's right at the end of your all inclusive's driveway or can be found by just wandering off their beach.

The good news is that you are close to a real Mexican fishing village (and it ain't Cancun). Depending on which resort you are staying at, you may be able to walk to Puerto Morelos or take a short cab or collectivo ride. As you will read on the pages of this website, Puerto Morelos is a safe, fun and relaxing place to be. Escape your resort for a few hours and enjoy the atmosphere and tranquility of the real Mexico.

Here are some advantages to visiting Puerto Morelos.

  • Prices of tours, snorkel & diving trips, spa treatments and fishing are much lower than will be offered at your resort, and less crowded too.
  • Prices of souvenirs and books are much lower than offered in your gift shop, plus in our bookstore, we have actual Puerto Morelos postcards, not Cancun or Playa del Carmen.
  • Food is better, much more authentic and diverse (and yes, it is perfectly safe)
  • You flew all the way to Mexico didn't you? Might as well see some of it!
  • It's good to get off the resort! After a few days of noise, waiting in line, and warm, flat Corona from a tap, you will need a break from AI!

General tips for staying at an all-inclusive resort

*Pace yourself. Do not try and eat & drink your money's worth in the first day.

*Watch the sun. It is very powerful and your milky-white snowbird skin will roast in minutes without protection

*Bring down a big stack of US $1 bills and spread 'em around like Sinatra at the Sands. Tip everybody! Tip the guy who waters the grass, tip the guy mopping the lobby, tip the maids, bartenders, bus staff...anyone who isn't a guest. Wages are low at these resorts and your tips can make a huge difference. Tipping in pesos is better, but it might be hard to get your hands on a stack of 10 pesos coins...plus how are you going to carry them around in your speedo? Yikes!

*Get off your resort once in a while. Explore our area. There is lots to see and it is easy, safe and inexpensive to do so. There are a whole pile of good ideas on this website, check 'em out!

*While at the resort, step out of yourself and be extra friendly. Start up a conversation with the people at the table next to you. Ask the waiter where he is from and about his family. Ask the bartender to make the drink he invented or likes to make. Be nice to your fellow guests and extra nice to the staff. You'll have a better time!

*Learn a few key Spanish phrases and test them out on everybody. We have excellent phrase books in the bookstore.

*Don't worry about the negative reviews on Tripadvisor and other web sites. I swear a large percentage of people just go on vacations so that they can prove how clever they are by running down the place they stay at and the staff. Complaining is the highlight of their trip. Don't buy into it.

*Don't worry about the weather. Many people freak out when they see the 15 day forecast and it shows rain every day. Don't believe it for a second. First off, any weather prediction over 24 hours is worthless and secondly, if we do get rain, it is usually a brief shower which then moves off. Besides, the weather is the weather. What can be done? Nobody forgets how to make a margarita just because it is raining!

*Do some research. This website is a good place to start and there are others. Consider purchasing a travel guide. We have them in the bookstore!

This website is all about Puerto Morelos, a beautiful Mexican fishing village on the ocean, between the resort towns of Playa del Carmen and Cancun, Mexico. Puerto Morelos is unique because it has maintained it's genuine "fishing village" atmosphere. Here you can snorkel, fish, explore jungle and Mayan ruins without being in a crowded resort town. Our beaches are wide, clean and practically deserted. Puerto Morelos features top restaurants serving great food to all budgets. Our shopping is unique and low-pressure, like our bookstore. A unique collection of 20,000 books  in a small Mexican fishing village. It's quirky and cool...kind of like Puerto Morelos. Sign up for our free newsletter on this page to sample the town, and plan your next vacation to Puerto Morelos.
