New Books and Products at Alma Libre Bookstore

We are striving to get new and interesting books and products for you at the bookstore. We are specializing in stuff that you cannot get anywhere else.

In addition to books, we are stocking some special grocery and gourmet items. Mexican vanilla, chocolate, coffee, hot sauces and more. Bring a taste of Mexico to your casa!

Your purchase at Alma Libre Bookstore helps keep us going and keeps the newsletter and all the other information flowing. Otherwise you'll have to ask Amazon where to eat dinner!

Day of the Dead - New at Alma Libre Bookstore, direct from central Mexico, Day of the Dead figures and skeleton dioramas. These fun and festive scenes are created with clay and hand painted. The dioramas are enclosed in a painted wooden box with glass. Very unique art only found in Mexico.

Map Chick Maps - Now you can buy them from us, but receive them at your house before you travel! Just click this link and you will be whisked to the order page. These are fantastic, detailed maps lovingly put together by Laura (Map Chick) & Perry from Iowa. They are really a guidebook and map rolled into one. These maps answer the question, "where does that road lead?"

There are a variety of maps available, or you can get them all in the "map junkie pack".

We will still have them in the shop of course as well.

New Guidebooks! - Lonely Planet is the go to guide in our area, and they have just updated all their guides. We're stocking their brand new Yucatan guide which covers our area and beyond, as well as the voluminous Mexico guide and books for Cuba, Belize and Guatemala.

Kids Books in Spanish and English - You will find a good selection of children's books about our area and the birds and animals they will find here. Most of our kid's books are in English and Spanish, including this familiar title.

Mexican Slang 101 - This book is the phrase book for those who want to really "talk the talk" and speak the way the locals speak. You'll find hip expressions like the proper way to say "cool" or "bummer", right down to the nastiest insults you can imagine. There is enough information in this book to be the life of the party, or get beaten up. Be careful how you use this book! Locally produced and available only at Alma Libre. Makes a great gift or gives you some training that Berlitz just is not going to give you! This book has quickly become a bestseller. Makes a great souvenir or gift.

A bargain at 65 pesos.

What Is That?! - We have picture books and field guides to everything that swims, slithers, crawls, runs or flies in our area. We have a great snorkel guide and fish cards, a choice of bird guides that cover the birds that live here and just visit, Maya Nature which is a beautiful picture book of wildlife who live in the Maya world and Les Beletsky's Southern Mexico guide, which covers animals, birds, reptiles, insects and flora and fauna.

We have children's books on the animals and fish in our area too.

Unique Expressions of Mexico, a beautiful booked commissioned by Xcaret to capture the colours, traditions and celebrations of Mexico. Great book at a great price, just 200 pesos.

Plants In The Mayan Culture, this gorgeous book features traditional remedies, food and art of our area. The book is locally produced, well researched and packed with photographs. We've been looking for a book like this for years, and we're delighted to have it now. Don't miss it, you will not find it any place else! New Edition just published and we have it!

Secrets In Stone: This book takes young readers into the world of the ancient Maya code and explains how it was deciphered and what it all means.

Not only is this the first book on the subject for children, this book also comes with its very own UV-raised "Glyphmaster," which allows budding archaeologists to create glyph Brubbings, just like real archaeologists.

Mexican Art Items - Just received a new shipment of these cool hand painted boxes in a variety of Mexican designs. Also some notebooks with handmade colourful covers and hand crafted purses and camera cases. Good prices! Come check 'em out.

Coffee! We've always found it ironic that Mexico grows some of the best coffee in the world, yet when you go to a supermarket here you will find a long row of instant Nescafe or some such mysterious powder.

To remedy that, we now carry a selection of Mexican grown, organic coffees. Buy it for your stay and take some more home to savour in your casa. People love this coffee!

Chichen Itza - We have lots of books about the Maya and the ruins in our area. This is one of our favourites because it has high-quality overlays that show what the Mayan temples looked like.

Check out this book and many others published by a company in Merida. Not available off our peninsula! (take that, Amazon!)

Honey - Mayan honey is about the sweetest you will ever taste, and we have found an excellent local source for our shop. You can buy it in a jar, with a real piece of honeycomb, or in this fun bear form.

The same local company makes propolis, a natural product found in beehives. For thousands of years it has been touted for its antibacterial and medical uses. Yucatecans use it on cuts and burns to promote healing. It is available in drops or in bar soap.

SPECIAL OFFER for Alma Libre Bookstore Customers

Cenotes of the Riviera Maya is the best book ever written about the cenotes in our area. Beautifully photographed, it could easily be called a coffee table book, but it is also has all the practical information you need to explore the cenotes whether you are swimming or diving. Many have drooled over this book, but the hefty (500 peso) price tag kept some people away.

Now author Steve Gerrard has authorized us to lower the price. At 300 pesos, this book is an incredible bargain and it has been flying off our shelves.

Mexican Chocolate - For a taste of Mexico on cold winter days, pick up some Imperial Chocolate at Alma Libre. Crush the chocolate disc and add to hot milk, add sugar to taste. Best hot chocolate ever, with a touch of cinnamon! Made in Merida.

Maps!

If you drive in our area, you need a map! We have excellent and detailed maps of the Yucatan, the country of Mexico, Cancun city, Merida as well as Belize, Guatemala, Cuba and Central America. We also have souvenir-quality maps you can hang on the wall.

We also carry the famous "Map Chick" Riviera Maya maps, which answer the question, "where does that road off the main highway go?"

Hot Sauce! We are also now carrying the popular Chimay hot sauces. Folks north of the border clamour for this stuff. Chimay makes the hottest habanero known to man, and they also make flavourful sauces for more sensitive palates. Chimay Salsa Habanera comes in four flavours, colors and levels of spiciness to suit your palate: Negra la menos picante (black, the least spicy), verde la poco picante (green, a little spicy), roja la muy picante (red, very spicy), amarilla la extra picante (yellow, extra spicy).

Our most popular sauce is a mini four-pack in a woven basket for just 85 pesos. Great gift for the foodie in your life, or a great souvenir of your Mexican vacation.

Mexico - Michael Coe: Michael D. Coe’s Mexico has long been recognized as the most readable and authoritative introduction to the region’s ancient civilizations. This book covers the entire history of Mexico before the Spanish arrived, from the Olmecs to the Aztecs.

This is a fascinating read with lots of photos and illustrations. We have this book at a special low price.

Coe also wrote The Maya and Breaking the Maya Code which we also have in stock at the bookstore.

Postcards! We've added a lot of new postcards to our collection, including more underwater shots by "Dive Diva." We have the largest selection of Puerto Morelos postcards, and they are all exclusive to Alma Libre. We know because we make 'em! We also have blank greeting cards to cover any occasion you may wish to celebrate while you are in paradise.

The Painted Fish and other Mayan Feasts

This book written by Sonja Lillvik, who founded the Cuzan Guest House in Punta Allen is memoir of a life in the land of the Maya told with food! This is a gorgeous book with more than 100 recipes (perfected in the Mayan Riviera and tested up north) and lots of glossy pictures of food and fun.

Curious George - is up to his old tricks, but now he's getting into mischief in two languages! And you know he's driving the man in the "amarillo sombrero" crazy! These books are great for kids and for anyone who is learning espanol. We have several "Jorge el curiosa" titles to choose from.

Casa Yucatan

A beautiful book showcasing the unique architectural style of the Yucatan...or to put it in another way, "A dazzling photographic journey, Casa Yucatan focuses on architectural elements, water spaces, and open-air living in houses both colonial and contemporary, including haciendas and coastal retreats. The Yucatan has undergone a remarkable restoration renaissance of late: ancient pyramids now share the dense jungle landscape with revived haciendas, and colonial homes boasting high-beamed ceilings and cool tile floors posture amidst elegant plazas and renovated nineteenth-century mansions."

Secrets of the Talking Jaguar is the story of the author's physical and spiritual journey from the south-western US to the highlands of Central America. There he becomes apprenticed to a local shaman who teaches Pretchel much about indigenous Mayan life and about life in general.

"This eloquent and expressive work. . .is highly recommended."—Library Journal

"Told with great honesty, insight, and generosity, Prechtel’s chronicle offers modern readers a privileged and rare glimpse into the complex and spiritually rich life of a contemporary Mayan village."
—Rocky Mountain News
